Sometimes the Best Way Is Not the Common Way
I recently noticed that some people wear their watch on the inside of their wrist instead of the outside.
At first, I thought it was unusual.
Then I learned why.
For a medic, it makes checking the time easier while treating a patient.
For a soldier, it reduces glare and protects the watch.
For a mechanic, it prevents scratches.
The same watch.
A different position.
A different purpose.
It reminded me of something much bigger.
We often assume that if someone is doing something differently, they're doing it wrong. But many times, they're simply optimizing for a different goal.
The best solution depends on the problem you're trying to solve.
This applies everywhere:
- Some people wake up at 5 AM. Others do their best work at midnight.
- Some build products quietly. Others build in public.
- Some lead from the front. Others lead by enabling others.
- Some wear their watch on the inside of their wrist.
Different doesn't always mean incorrect.
Before judging someone's approach, ask:
"What problem are they trying to solve?"
You may discover that what looked unusual was actually intentional.
Sometimes wisdom isn't about following the standard way.
It's about understanding why the standard exists—and knowing when to choose a different path.
